Investigation Creates Win-Win Situation

Weights & Measures Helps Protect Consumers and Stock State Food Banks

San Diego County received investigative cost recovery for helping prosecutors with a $3.3 million case involving three canned-tuna companies. Last month, Bumble Bee Foods, LLC, Tri-Union Seafoods, LLC (dba Chicken of the Sea International) and StarKist Company agreed to settle the lawsuit, which alleged that the companies sold canned tuna that failed to meet net weight standards. The settlement called for them to pay $2,548,500 in civil penalties, $451,500 for investigative costs and $300,000 in restitution. The County received $787. In addition, the companies must provide canned tuna to California food banks. The investigation was conducted by the County’s Department of Agriculture, Weights & Measures in addition to six other counties and the California Department of Food and Agriculture’s Division of Measurement Standards.
