On May 1, 2013, Agriculture, Weights and Measures (AWM) staff teamed with Department of Environmental Health (DEH) and provided outreach to managers of certified farmers’ markets. DEH presented information on the new California Cottage Food Law which allows individuals to prepare, package and label food made in their home and sell direct or indirect to consumers. AWM gave managers an overview of the direct marketing laws and regulations, inspection procedures, and enforcement. AWM outlined the managers’ responsibilities which include ensuring the farmers only sell produce they grew on their certified farm and gave tips on how to comply with the most common violations. Certified farmers’ markets and the new Cottage Food law provide small farmers and home cooks a great opportunity to sell their products. DEH and AWM oversight ensures the safety and protection of the consumers.
