Detector Dog Team Inspects Local Post Office for First Time

While most people were sleeping Sept. 24, Agriculture, Weights and Measures (AWM) Detector Dog “Drake” worked through the night to keep out unwanted pests.  After months of preparation, the first San Diego County dog team inspection in a local U.S. Post Office took place at the Margaret Sellers Mail Processing Center in Carmel Mountain.  A light mail night was chosen so Drake could acclimate to the new working environment.  It was a great success.  AWM has two Detector Dog Teams trained to inspect packages for prohibited raw agricultural products that may come through the mail. Their work helps safeguard San Diego County’s agricultural industry from harmful insects and diseases that may be carried on or in raw agricultural products.
