The Office of the Public Conservator investigates referrals for LPS conservatorships to arrange placement and mental health treatment for adults who are gravely disabled (unable or unwilling to provide for basic food, shelter, and clothing) as the result of a mental disorder and are incapable of accepting voluntary treatment and family or others are not able and willing to meet these personal needs. LPS Investigators assess and make recommendations to the Court regarding the appropriateness of a Temporary and/or Permanent LPS Conservatorship. Conservatorship Investigators also perform investigations and make recommendations to the Superior Court on a variety of issues that relate to conservatees. Investigators can also determine whether legal criteria are met to request a court-ordered psychiatric evaluation for individuals with mental illness who are currently gravely disabled, or a danger to themselves or others and are refusing mental health treatment. Visit https://sd.panosoft.com/SDPC/portal/portal.html if you would like to request a court-ordered psychiatric evaluation.
Duty workers are available by telephone Monday through Friday 8:00am to 5:00pm to provide information and referrals to the community.
