We are StormReady!

Storm Ready County logoIt may seem like summer out there, but we are still in the winter months, at least technically, and winter rains could come at any time. However, when they do the County of San Diego is once again designated as a StormReady County, thanks to the efforts of DPW’s Flood Control Section. This certification demonstrates that San Diego County is prepared for storm-related disasters. The program also helps save on insurance premiums across the unincorporated county

Approximately 90% of all Presidentially-declared disasters in the United States are weather related, involving approximately 500 deaths and causing nearly $14 billion in damage each year. Certification as a StormReady County by the National Weather Service confirms the County is prepared to respond to weather-related disasters through advanced planning, real-time response, education, and awareness. Since our last StormReady certification, Flood Control staff has redesigned our storm operations center (The Weather Center) to more efficiently conduct storm operations, expanded our webcam program at low water crossings subject to frequent flooding, developed a near real-time flood forecast model for the San Luis Rey River Watershed, designed and helped conduct a comprehensive regional flood disaster exercise, and expanded the ALERT flood warning system. All to help us better prepare and keep us informed during severe weather.

The StormReady recertification runs through 2016.

YOU can help improve water quality in our rivers, creeks and even our ocean. Find out more about the San Diego River Watershed and the San Luis Rey Watershed.

The Watershed Protection Ordinance was adopted by the Board of Supervisors on May 13, 2015 and will become effective June 12, 2015. For a copy of the ordinance click here
