 Reporting Procedures and Forms

Active/Suspected TB Cases

In accordance with California Regulations, all patients with suspected or confirmed active TB disease must be reported to San Diego County TB Control within 24 hours of initial suspicion. Reporting forms may be faxed to (619) 692-5516 or the information called to (619) 692-8610. For more information, please call (619) 692-8610.

Children with Latent TB Infection (LTBI)

Reporting criteria in San Diego County for individuals with latent TB infection:

  • Child < 2 years old (up to second birthday) with a tuberculin skin test (TST) > 10mm and no BCG vaccination. Please review the child's vaccination history before submitting the report and include it on the CMR.
  • Child < 2 years old (up to second birthday) with a positive interferon gamma release assay (IGRA) test result, (e.g., QuantiFERON or TSpot), regardless of BCG vaccination status.
  • At least two documented TST or IGRA converters, negative to positive, within two years among children in any one household.
  • Child with a TST > 5mm or a positive IGRA and a symptomatic adult has been identified by the reporter.

Confidential Morbidity Report (CMR) should be filled out and faxed to (619) 692-5516. If chest x-ray results are pending, please wait for results before faxing the CMR. Do not use CMR for active cases (see #1). Please phone (619) 692-8610 for more information.

Reports of young children with LTBI are used to identify the individual who infected the child. This is because LTBI in a child indicates recent transmission. Treatment of the child remains the responsibility of the provider. Any information regarding someone with signs or symptoms consistent with TB in the child's environment should be included on the CMR.

Discharge Approval for in-facility patients

In accordance with California regulations, hospitalized patients with suspected or confirmed active tuberculosis must have approval from San Diego County TB Control prior to hospital discharge. Discharge care plan forms may be faxed to (619) 692-5516. Instructions are included with the form. For more information, please phone (619) 692-8610 (8:00am - 5:00pm on weekdays).

Weekend/holidays case reports/discharge review, please call (619) 540-0194 (Mobile).
