Library Director José Aponte at the Hula Hoop Contest
Get ready to rock at San Diego County Library! Rockin' Recess is a new program that encourages kids and families to exercise together and build healthy futures. This fun and interactive series is a 10-15 minute physical activity break that encourages families to participate in games and movement together. It is being offered at six branches this fall; please contact the branch for information as programs are subject to change.
To kick off the Rockin' Recess program, San Diego County Library Director José Aponte and Deputy Director Susan Moore challenged kids at the El Cajon Branch to a Hula Hoop Contest on July 23. 105 customers attended the Hula Hoop Contest and while the library's fearless leaders fought valiantly, they eventually lost to a gaggle of elementary schoolers. Check out the video of the hula hoop showdown!
"Nourishing the body and maintaining a healthy lifestyle is just as important as nourishing the mind," said Library Director José Aponte. "At San Diego County Library, we work to provide our communities an encouraging environment where children have access to services that will help fuel their education and give them the energy they need to succeed."
SDCL's Rockin' Recess program is aligned with the County of San Diego's Live Well initiative and is just one of the 28,000 programs San Diego County Library offers each year. Rockin' Recess is adapted from the Healthy Works Instant Fitness program, provided by the County of San Diego Health and Human Services Agency. Funding and support for this programming is made possible through the California Department of Public Health's Nutrition Education and Obesity Prevention Branch, with funding from USDA SNAP-Ed, known in California as CalFresh.
