SDCL's Volunteers of the Year: 2011

John Williams

John Williams has volunteered at the Poway Branch for 10 years - 5 hours a day, 5 days a week! His dedication is matched by few, as he manages the Friends of the Poway Library bookstore and helps raise money for library materials and services. Williams traces his love for libraries back to 1949 in Louisiana, when he and his brother set up their high school's first library. As a Supply Officer in the U.S. Navy, Williams maintained the onboard library, keeping books in his stateroom and loaning them out to anyone needing a good read. When he isn't receiving, cleaning, sorting, and pricing donated books for the bookstore, Williams reads everything and anything so he can "talk books" and connect with others.

James Munger

James Munger put in over 220 hours in his first two months volunteering at the Encinitas Library, earning the reputation of a devoted library advocate. Staff describes him as a "super shelver and master marketer," as he helps display the collection and assists staff with library programs. Born and raised in Wisconsin, Munger has lived in San Diego for five years and is currently employed at the Carlsbad Library. When he isn't at the library, Munger enjoys jazz music, swimming, and British detective mysteries.

Steve Lee

Steve Lee is honored by the Fallbrook Library staff for his "positive, can-do attitude" and dedication to excellent library services. Originally from Illinois, Lee has lived in Fallbrook for the past 6 years. He worked at Intel for 27 years and currently volunteers for PAWS, an organization that packages pet supplies to help animals in need. Lee loves volunteering at the library because of the variety of duties, but his favorite part is interacting with the customers and helping them locate whatever it is they're looking for. When he isn't volunteering, Lee can be found reading British mystery novels.
