Work Projects

About the Program

The Work Projects program is an alternative sentencing option for both adult and juvenile offenders. Defendants are referred to this program by the Court to complete manual labor as a sanction for an offense, in lieu of paying fines or serving time in custody. The Probation Department contracts with over 30 public agencies and supplies 8-28 person crews to assist with litter cleanup, weed abatement, firebreaks, maintaining and improving landscapes, digging and clearing flood control trenches/ditches and erosion control; in addition to numerous other tasks to preserve and enhance San Diego County.

In FY 2015-2016, the Work Projects program ran 2,598 crews and collected $2,373,540 in enrollment fees and crew revenue for labor in support of a cleaner, healthier environment for San Diego County. The enrollment fees paid by program participants and the revenues paid for the use of our crews are designed to recover the cost of maintaining the program so that it is not dependent on taxpayer dollars.
