To many of us, pets are family. During the COVID-19 pandemic, so much of our lifestyle has changed. Some older adults and persons with disabilities may need extra support to take care of their pets.

San Diego Humane Society helps people keep their pets by providing essential pet services and support to pet families in need. Through the Community Pet Pantry service, anyone can pick up dog and/or cat food at one of the distribution sites listed here.

 

AniMeals Relief Program

Helen Woodward Animal Center’s AniMeals program provides pet food for the pets of homebound seniors, military veterans, homeless, and those who are struggling with the loss of employment due to the COVID-19 outbreak. Pet owners can pick up two-weeks’ worth of food for their dog and/or cat and other supplies as available at Helen Woodward Animal Center (6461 El Apajo, Rancho Santa Fe, CA 92067). Fill out the AniMeals Relief Form at www.animalcenter.org/animealsrelief to see if you qualify for the food assistance.

The San Diego Humane Society has created a Community Resource Guide with information on discount pet exams, spay and neuter services, vaccinations, and much more. The guide also includes Service Animal Information.

Keeping Pets HOME

The Keeping Pets HOME program offers support to older adults, 65 years and older, who are concerned about caring for their senior dog (7 years of age or older). The program provides support for senior pet emergency needs, annual vetting, food, and other supplies. Learn more about the program and additional HOME Programs for senior dogs here.

 

Assistance Dog Special Allowance (ADSA)

The Assistance Dog Special Allowance (ADSA) program provides a monthly payment of $50 to eligible persons who use a guide, signal, or service dog to help them with their disability-related needs. The allowance is to help pay the costs of food, grooming, and health care for the dog. Click here to learn more about the program and apply.
