About the Descanso Library
The Descanso Branch of San Diego County Library is nestled in the beautiful countryside, was built out of love, and continues to thrive with the help of a close-knit community and friendly staff. The library originally opened in 1915 and has been housed in eight different facilities since then, with their current 2,672-square-foot building being partially paid for by Friends of the Library donations and even fundraising from the local Descanso Elementary School students.
The new library opened in 1997 and has had numerous remodels since then. Now hosting a large children's area, a teen space, and a community room, staff focus on providing the community with essential services that they would otherwise go without. The Internet computers at the library are always busy, considering that there is no high speed Internet access available in Descanso, save for purchasing a very expensive satellite system. The community relies on the library for this service, as well as for entertainment as DVD's are the most popular part of the collection.
The Friends of the Descanso Library are very active and hold book sales and other fundraisers to help support the library. They also raise money throughout the year to offer local college students a chance at a $1,000 college scholarship. Two students have received the scholarship so far and the Friends continue to save up for next year's recipient. With the Friends putting in a starting amount for each scholarship, the community pitches in the rest, making the final product a true gift.
