Donations and auctions of surplus County personal property 

What to know

County personal property includes office furniture, equipment, vehicles, and many other items.  

When we will no longer use property, it goes through two steps: 

1. We offer it to community partners as a donation 
2. We auction it to the public 

You need to register on GovDeals for either.  

Step 1: Donations to community partners 

The County first offers the property as a donation to eligible San Diego County community partners. This includes: 

• 501(c)(3) nonprofit organizations 
• Other public agencies (schools, tribal governments) 

Donations to organizations in Mexico are possible through partners with a special Release of Liability. 

How to claim a donation 

1. Register on GovDeals.com. 
2. Subscribe to the “San Diego County Tier II – Community Partners ” on GovDeals. See instructions. 
3. Submit a Release of Liability form to propertydisposal.cs@sdcounty.ca.gov. 
4. The County will review your request. We usually respond within a few business days.  
5. If you are approved, you can claim the property on GovDeals.  
6. After you get confirmation, you need to pick up the property. The County does not deliver property.

Step 2: Public auction 

If Community Partners do not claim the property, we auction it to the public on GovDeals.com. You must register to bid. All auctions are online. 

Other County auctions 

• The Public Administrator auctions estate personal and real property. 
• The County Treasurer/Tax Collector auctions tax-defaulted real estate properties.
