Request Flexible Family Funds

What to know

Children in foster care can get funds to help pay for enrichment activities or items for personal development.

Who requests

The youth can request funds for themselves. Others who can request funds:

• The assigned social worker
• A supporting social worker, such as Placement, IFPP, etc.
• A caregiver
• An FFA or STRTP representative
• The child’s CASA
• A community provider who is supporting the youth in their foster care placement

Kinds of activities and items

• Camps during school breaks
• Dance, music, sports, arts, lessons or teams, etc.
• Youth travel expenses for an enrichment trip
• Culturally appropriate enhancement products not covered by foster care funds
• Extracurricular activities through school (dances, field trips, etc.)
• Items needed in order to support the youth’s participation in any of the activities outlined above
• Items needed to support Independent Living goals for employment, education, physical health, mental health and well-being

Who can get funds

• A company or organization can get funds directly
• The youth or a caregiver as reimbursement for a pre-approved purchase

Approvals

Pre-approvals

You must get pre-approval for:

• Any travel
• Any activity or item over $500
• Reimbursement to the youth or caregiver

Juvenile Court approvals

Juvenile Court may need to approve certain activities or items. Some examples:

• Travel outside San Diego County
• Activities or items that change your body
• Activities with high risk of injury
