If you trim brush and plants around your home, you may have a pile of dry vegetation. Community Chipping Events can help you get rid of it.
Clearing dry brush and excess vegetation around your home creates defensible space, helping to slow the spread of fire.
Who can join
Residents in the area around each event.
How it works
- Gather tree branches, brush, and shrubs. Do not include trash or vegetation netting.
- Bring the vegetation to the event. We do not pick it up from your property. A crew will unload it at the event and chip the vegetation.
You can chip
- Tree branches up to 6 inches in diameter.
- Brush and shrubs
Do not bag any materials.
You cannot chip
- Palm fronds
- Ice plant or succulents
- Poison oak
- Construction debris, lumber, or trash.
Amount
The chipping truck can typically hold 20 yards. You can bring material until the truck is full.
Upcoming events
Local Fire Safe Councils organize the chipping events. Events may change because of weather or safety concerns or funding.

The events are in partnerships with organizations like the Fire Safe Council of San Diego County, CAL FIRE/San Diego County Fire, San Diego City Fire-Rescue, local fire districts, and the Resource Conservation District. Chipping Events are supported by the Regional Resilience Grant Program implemented by the Governor’s Office of Land Use and Climate Innovation.
