The County of San Diego was established by the California State Legislature on February 18, 1850 as one of the original 27 counties of California. That same year, a Court of Sessions was created to handle administrative affairs of San Diego County government.

In 1852, a five-member Board of Supervisors was created by the California State Legislature. The San Diego County Board of Supervisors held its first meeting on January 3, 1853 when the official records of actions of the Board of Supervisors began.

As the steward of the official records of the Board of Supervisors, the Clerk of the Board provides the public with tools to easily search for public records.  In June 2010, the Clerk of the Board of Supervisors digitized the County's microfilm records of official Board actions dating back to 1877.  You can now search over 130 years of County records online.
