Individuals with a flair for research and a desire to ensure good government in San Diego County are needed for the Grand Jury to monitor governmental activities and carry out the Grand Jury’s traditional investigative role.

Instructions

  • Individuals must have lived in the county at least one year prior to July 1 and be able to serve four or five days per week during the fiscal year from July 1 through June 30. Payment is $25 per day plus mileage and free parking.
  • Applicants must be U.S. citizens at least 18 years old with ordinary intelligence, sound judgment, good character, and knowledge of the English language. Those not eligible for service include elected officials, current trial jurors, and those who have served on a California grand jury within a year of the selection date. Persons convicted of a felony, malfeasance in office, or another high crime are also not eligible.
  • The 19 Grand Jurors and 11 alternates will be chosen at a random drawing scheduled for early June in the Superior Court Presiding Department of the downtown courthouse. Those nominated for the drawing will be notified of their selection by return mail.

  • The Jury Commissioner must receive applications by mid January to qualify for the applicant pool.

Application Period

The application period for the 2026-2027 San Diego Grand Jury is open starting November 12th, 2025. Applications are due by January 24, 2026.
