The 8-week Public Health Nurse (PHN) Residency Program provides a comprehensive overview of the County’s public health and social services to nurses in their transition to public health nursing. Opportunities for professional nurse development such as career advancement, nurse leader development, standardized, centralized and evidence-based approach to education. The program provides learning opportunities that foster teamwork and relationship building.

Can I apply before I graduate from my nursing program, or before I get a
Registered Nurse (RN) license from the California Board of Registered Nursing?
Yes, you can submit your application before graduating from a nursing program or before getting an RN license. Possession of a valid and current RN license by the California Board of Registered Nursing is required at the time of appointment or your official start date.

Do I need to possess a PHN certificate from the California Board of
Registered Nursing during application?
No. Possession of a PHN certificate from the California Board of Registered Nursing is highly recommended by the time of appointment or your official start date. The PHN certificate is required by completion of the PHN Residency Program, which will result in promotion from Staff Nurse to Public Health Nurse.

I am not a recent graduate but am interested to transition to public
health nursing. Can I apply if I have over one year of nursing experience?
Yes. The program is open to both new graduate nurses and experienced nurses who may be new to public health. Our goal is to recruit and develop nurses who want to launch their career in public health.
