College Fee Waiver (CFW) Instructions

Required Documents:

  • Birth Certificate - It must show the student and veteran's name. If the veteran and dependents last names are different, please provide additional documentation (I.E. Marriage Certificate, name change documents, adoption paperwork)
  • Benefit Summary & Service Verification Letter (Issued by the VA: 1-800-827-1000 or VA.gov) - For the purpose of Plan A, letter must have been generated within the last 12 months if not permanent & total
  • Current year application form (DVS-40 Rev 1/24) - Available at www.calvet.ca.gov.
  • Plan A: VSD-020 - Election to Receive CalVet College Fee Waiver Benefits. 
    • DD-214 Required (Member 2 or 4)
  • Plan B: Tax Information - Student's income tax return for previous calendar year
    • Filed taxes: Signed copy of the student's income tax return (1040/540)
    • Did not file taxes: Letter of Non-Filing confirming that a return was not filed (dated after tax deadline, generally April 16)
    • DD-214 Requested (Member 2 or 4)

 

NOTE: Income Limits: 

  • Academic Year 2025-26 (State Poverty Level of $22,273)
  • Academic Year 2026-27 (State Poverty Level of $22,941)
