Healthy Cities, Healthy Residents
Healthy Cities, Healthy Residents (HCHR)
is a CalFresh Healthy Living project designed to address health
disparities and help create healthy, thriving communities. Health
disparities are strongly related to issues faced by low-income
communities, such as poverty, underfunded schools, and lack of
affordable housing. HCHR staff and community partners work to plan
and develop policies that support healthy food environments, safe
community spaces, and active transportation methods like walking,
biking, and public transit.
Activities and Strategies
- Provide technical assistance to cities to advance policies and
help develop built environments that increase active transportation
and active living.
- Policies may include active transportation, pedestrian, land use and/or Climate Action Plans.
- Immediate built environment changes may include quick builds: Most quick-build projects can be constructed in days or weeks.
- Encourage resident participation in the adoption of these policies and the creation of healthier built environments.
In partnership with resident coalitions and cities, the County of San
Diego provides direct funding along with technical assistance in the
planning and development of policies that support active
transportation and placemaking. Local HCHR coalitions are:
- Working to include more residents and community stakeholders who will champion policy and environmental change in partnering cities.
- Training residents using the Resident Leadership Academy curriculum or similar leadership models.
- Conducting scans of their city’s local policies and environmental assessments of their community.
- Working with their cities to develop community-driven active transportation/active living policies.
- Encouraging decision-makers to adopt the policies and implement environmental changes.
Past Partners and Activities
- Environmental Health Coalition and the City of National City
- International Rescue Committee and the City of El Cajon
- Vista Community Clinic and the City of Vista
