Basic Life and Accidental Death and Dismemberment (AD&D) Insurance

Life and AD&D insurance are administered by MetLife and provide a financial benefit for your beneficiary(ies) in the event of your death. The County automatically purchases Basic Life and AD&D insurance with amounts based on your job classification.

  • If you pass away, your beneficiary(ies) may receive the life insurance benefit
  • If an accident causes your death, your beneficiary(ies) may receive the AD&D benefit, in addition to the life insurance benefit
  • If an accident causes you to lose one or more limbs or senses, you may receive all or part of your AD&D coverage amount

Dependent Life Insurance

The County automatically purchases $2,000 of life insurance coverage for all employees’ eligible dependents (including your spouse, domestic partner, and/or children). If an eligible dependent passes away, you are the beneficiary.  Please email County Employee Benefits at DHRBenefits.FGG@sdcounty.ca.gov to start a claim.

Supplemental Life Insurance

You may choose to purchase Supplemental Life coverage for yourself in amounts equal to 1-6 times your annual salary.

Guaranteed Issue Amount

  • If you enroll in Supplemental Life Insurance when you are first eligible as a new hire, you can purchase up to three times your annual salary without submitting a Statement of Health.

Statement of Health

  • If you newly enroll or increase Supplemental Life Insurance during Open Enrollment you will need to complete a Statement of Health.
  • MetLife will email you a request  in November to login to their website to complete an electronic Statement of Health.
  • Final approval comes from MetLife and your coverage will be effective January 1st or first of the month following your approval - whichever is later. 

Supplemental AD&D Insurance

You may choose to purchase additional coverage for yourself or for you and your family in amounts equal to 1-3 times your annual salary.

  • No Statement of Health is needed.

Supplemental Spouse Life Insurance

You may purchase additional coverage for your spouse or domestic partner in the amount of $10,000.  You are automatically the beneficiary of this coverage.

  • If you enroll in Supplemental Spouse Life Insurance when you are first eligible as a new hire, or when you get married, no Statement of Health is needed.
  • If you newly enroll in Supplemental Spouse Life Insurance at Open Enrollment, your spouse will need to complete a Statement of Health.
    • MetLife will email you a link to their website in November to complete an electronic Statement of Health.
    • Final approval comes from MetLife. If approved, your spouse or domestic partner’s coverage will be effective January 1st or the first of the month following approval, whichever is later.

All County of San Diego employees are required to setup their life insurance beneficiaries with MetLife.
