Transmission Based Precautions
Use Transmission Based Precautions for patients/residents known or suspected to be infected with pathogens transmitted by through contact, droplet, and aerosols. (e.g., COVID-19).

Use Contact Precautions for patients/residents known or suspected to be infected with pathogens transmitted by touching contaminated surfaces, objects or during close contact with the patient/resident. (e.g., multi-drug resistant organism (MDROs) not eligible for ESP/EBP, respiratory syncytial virus (RSV), draining wounds not contained by dressings, scabies).

Use Enteric Contact Precautions for patients/residents known or suspected to be infected with pathogens transmitted by contaminated hands or surfaces from gastrointestinal infections in which hand washing is encouraged as additional part of hand hygiene practices. (e.g., hepatitis A, norovirus, or Clostridioides difficile).

Antimicrobial stewardship programs work to improve antibiotic prescribing and use, which is critical to effectively treat infections, protect patients from harm from unnecessary antimicrobial use, and combat antimicrobial resistance. Antimicrobial stewardship programs focus on improving/optimizing management/treatment (e.g., antimicrobial medications), however diagnostic stewardship works “upstream” to guide appropriate use of diagnostic testing and preventing false positives and overdiagnosis (AHRQ). Both antimicrobial stewardship and diagnostic stewardship work hand-in-hand to combat antibiotic resistance.
The County of San Diego is collaborating with local and state partners to support antimicrobial stewardship and diagnostic stewardship efforts. For more information, please contact phs.hai.hhsa@sdcounty.ca.gov.
