Tree Giveaways Advance Climate Action Goals
10/15/25
As part of the County of San Diego’s (County) Climate Action Plan (CAP), the Equity-Driven Tree Planting Program (EDTPP) is expanding tree planting efforts across County-owned properties and private properties in the unincorporated area. In addition to supporting CAP goals, tree planting results in equitable tree canopy which strengthens community resilience to climate change by providing more shade and improved air quality. With a CAP goal of planting 70,560 trees by 2030, the EDTPP expands on the County’s existing efforts, including 40,900 trees planted by the Department of Parks and Recreation since 2014 in parks and open space preserves.
Private Property Tree Planting Intiative
On September 27, 2025, the County held the first free tree distribution event at Lake Morena County Park in Campo, providing more than 550 trees to local residents in the Mountain Empire communities . This area was chosen for the first free tree distribution event due to a mix of high need and low existing tree coverage. This was the inaugural event for the Private Property Tree Planting Initiative, which expands the tree canopy on private properties in the unincorporated area by providing free trees to residents. Additional events will occur throughout the unincorporated area.
