In March, Planning & Development Services (PDS) employee, Alyssa Way, attended the San Diego Regional Energy Academy along with 31 other participants hosted by Energy Policy Initiatives Center (EPIC) and the San Diego Regional Climate Collaborative (SDRCC). The Energy Academy brings together a diverse group of individuals across the region to understand San Diego’s energy and power systems in order to make informed decisions towards regional climate resilience goals. This was the second cohort that the Energy Academy hosted where participants had the opportunity to learn about our state and local energy infrastructure and supply and attend field trips at the University of San Diego, Port of San Diego, and University of California San Diego.
As a planner on the Climate Action Plan team, Alyssa is focused on implementing energy programming while navigating the region’s complex energy landscape. Alyssa intends to apply the knowledge gained from the Energy Academy towards equitable implementation of energy programs focused on an evolving energy system. A highlight from the Energy Academy was having the opportunity to visit the Port of San Diego’s Tenth Avenue Marine Terminal where the cohort got to see behind the scenes of electrical infrastructure working in real-time to support large scale energy uses.
Beyond all that this second cohort learned, the Energy Academy is also an important resource for the region. The Energy Academy is helping to build a professional energy network across all cohorts which is essential to develop a more resilient energy future.
