County Grows its EV Fleet for a Greener Future

04/16/25

The County of San Diego (County) Department of General Services, managing over 4,500 County fleet vehicles and off-road equipment, has reached a significant milestone by adding a new Ford F-150 Lightning – the 250th electric vehicle (EV) to join the County's fleet. In line with State vehicle electrification efforts, the County is committed to accelerating the transition to EVs and reducing greenhouse gas emissions from gas-powered vehicles.

Expanding the County's EV Fleet

The County's EV fleet features a variety of EVs, including Ford F-150 Lightnings, Ford Escapes, Chrysler Pacifica vans, Toyota RAV4s, Jeeps, and more. As part of the 2019 Electric Vehicle Roadmap, the County sought to convert 250 gas-powered vehicles to EVs by 2025 and install the necessary EV charging infrastructure – a goal that has been successfully accomplished. Watch this County fleet video to see how this accomplishment supports community efforts and sustainability goals.

Looking Ahead: Future EV Goals

The County is now striving for its second EV Roadmap goal: to place 501 EVs in service by 2027. That is more than double the current EV numbers in just two years! The County's commitment to expanding its EV fleet is reinforced by the 2024 Climate Action Plan (CAP), which emphasizes the importance of transitioning to clean transportation to mitigate climate change impacts.

In addition to transitioning the County fleet, the County is also working to develop the following EV programs outlined in the 2024 CAP to support residents in adopting EVs:

  • Public EV Charger Incentive Pilot Program: A two-year incentive-based pilot program that will encourage the installation of publicly accessible EV chargers at private property (e.g., commercial sites, retail parking lots, multi-family housing complexes) in the unincorporated area.
  • Zero Emission Vehicle Incentive Program: The County will be partnering with SANDAG on a vehicle rebate program that will help unincorporated area residents gain access to electric vehicles.
These efforts focus on making EVs more accessible to everyone in the county, resulting in reduced GHG emissions and cleaner air.
