Save Water and Energy This Summer!

06/12/25

Summer season is almost here—and we Californians know what that means... hot weather. Rising temperatures often lead to increased demand on our energy and water systems with higher usage of air conditioning (A/C), fans, sprinklers, and other utilities. That's why the warmer months are the perfect time to become more mindful of how we use energy and water at home to reduce both our carbon footprint and our bills!

See below some simple tips to help you save energy and water at home.

Minimize Your A/C Usage: Stay cool on a hot day by opening your windows at home or visiting a local, free cool zone. Consider installing a Heat Pump—they work great for cooling, are highly-efficient year-round, and reduce cooling costs compared to conventional air conditioners.

Upgrade Lighting and Appliances: From low-flow showerheads, faucets, and toilets to energy-efficient washing machines, lighting and refrigerators, there’s a sustainable option for nearly every appliance in your home. Explore Energy Star Qualified Appliances for some options.

Wash and Dry Laundry Sustainably: The average American household washes 300 loads of laundry each year, using about 12,000 gallons of water per year! Try washing only full loads of laundry and use the appropriate water level and load-size selection on the washing machine. Also, consider taking advantage of the summer sun and warmth by line drying your clothes.

Shower with Less Water: Every minute spent in a shower uses about 2.5 gallons of water. Consider setting a 5-minute timer, using efficient showerheads, and turning off the water while soaping up or shampooing.

Water Your Garden Wisely: Water outdoor plants in the early morning or at the end of the day to reduce evaporation. Also, consider starting a native plant garden which requires less water and maintenance. Check out the County’s Native Landscape Program to learn more.

Fix Leaks and Drafts: Leaky faucets, poorly insulated windows and doors, and clogged air conditioners waste water, energy, and money. Check for leaks and drafts around your home and fix them one by one. This is especially important during the hottest months.
