There are more than 25 species of mosquito that have been found in San Diego County. Only a few of these species can carry diseases that can be spread to humans. Native Culex mosquitoes can spread West Nile virus and tend to bite during dusk and dawn. Invasive Aedes mosquitoes bite during the day and can transmit Zika, dengue, yellow fever, and chikungunya viruses. All mosquitoes lay their eggs in or near standing water. Finding, dumping, and treating standing water is the best way to control mosquito problems.
