Stop Mosquito Bites
Wearing mosquito repellent is the best way to prevent mosquito bites. By preventing mosquito bites repellent can also prevent the spread of mosquito diseases like dengue, Zika, and West Nile virus. Always follow the directions on the label of the repellent.
Apply repellent to skin and on top of clothing. Do not apply underneath clothing. If using sunscreen as well, apply sunscreen first and then repellent.
Choosing the right active ingredients in your repellent makes sure it really protects you from mosquito bites. Look for active ingredients that are tested by the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) to make sure they are safe and effective.
Pick a repellent with:
- DEET
- Picaridin
- IR3535
- Oil of lemon eucalyptus
- Para-menthane-diol
- 2-undecanone
When choosing a repellent, also look at the percentage of the active ingredient. A higher percentage will protect you for longer, but may also be more irritating to skin. Look for a repellent that meets your needs and follow all the directions on the label.
Is insect repellent safe for children?
Many repellents are safe for use on children above a certain age. Always check the label instructions for safety information. Adults should apply repellent to children – do not allow children to apply repellent themselves.

- Avoid products like mosquito repellent stickers and wristbands.
- Spatial repellents that use an active ingredient metofluthrin can be helpful, but will only offer protection in a limited area
Screens
- Make sure screen mesh is as small as possible, mosquitoes are tiny and can fly through larger mesh.
- Keep screens on doors and windows free from holes to prevent mosquitoes from entering the home.
- Add large screens to garages to help keep mosquitoes out.
