Landlords - How we can help you

Landlord Updates

New Legislation:

Assembly Bill 1482 went into effect on January 1, 2020. This new law caps annual rent increases in California at 5% plus Consumer Price Index and requires landlords to have "just cause" in order to evict tenants. See more information on the California Rent Cap & Just Cause.

Rent Increase Process:

The Housing Authority of the County of San Diego (HACSD) will continue to determine whether or not the rent requested by the landlord for a Housing Choice Voucher rental assistance household is reasonable in accordance to federal housing policies. The HACSD will also continue to notify the landlord of whether or not the rent increase request can be approved. The rent increase requested must be in accordance with any rent increase provisions specified in the lease and the HUD tenancy addendum. It is the responsibility of the landlord to be in compliance with State Law. View the HACSD's Guidelines on Requesting a Rent Increase.

If you have specific questions on the rent control bill and if it applies to your current unit, please contact your Legal Advisor or contact the Legal Aid Society of San Diego if you would like an overview or would like to attend one of their trainings on the new law. They can be reached at 1-844-449-3500.
