Universal Waste

pile of household batteries

Universal waste (U-waste) is a type of hazardous waste that is generated by residents and businesses alike. U-waste is very common and poses a lower risk to people and the environment than other hazardous wastes. It is regulated under California's "Universal Waste Rule," which requires the recycling* of most types of U-waste.

(*Please note: Although most universal wastes are recyclable, they may not be put in your blue recycling bin or dumpster. These wastes must be taken to proper facilities for recycling.)

Did you know batteries are the number one cause of fires in waste collection trucks?

Household batteries are one of the most common types of Universal Waste, and when it gets thrown away in the traditional trash, recycling, or organics bins, it can be extremely harmful to people and the environment. That is why it is very important that people dispose of them correctly at a household hazardous waste facility or at a dedicated collection center. To help residents with proper battery disposal, the County of San Diego Department of Public Works has implemented a FREE battery collection program in several County Library Branches.    Check out the Free Battery Collection guide to find participating locations near you.
