Instructions: In order to successfully apply, please follow the steps below:
Step 1. Read the participation guidelines section on the program website.
Step 2. Use the Find Your Sunset Zone map to access the current tree list and species profiles for your area by entering the property address, selecting the search feature and opening the ‘tree list link’ that populates with available tree species and profiles. Please note the Sunset Zone listed in the map results to enter into your application.
Step 3. Choose tree species carefully. Please first determine the space available on the property for trees to grow to maturity, keeping in mind overhead and underground utilities, infrastructure and other potential conflicts. Mature height and width are listed within each tree profile. Read the tree profiles thoroughly. You may select up to three tree species to include in your application; you will have an opportunity to review and make changes to the tree order prior to tree pick up. The County will determine the number of trees each applicant is eligible to receive based on the following factors:
- Community prioritization: Based on the County’s Tree Equity Study. For more information on tree equity, please see the Equity Driven Tree Planting Program Recommendations Report.
- Available program resources: The County is planning on giving away around 2,225 trees per year, through 2030, and will monitor resources to ensure that they are distributed efficiently.
- Size and space availability of property: To ensure that the property can accommodate the number of requested trees, lot size is verified via aerial image.
Step 4. Open the Property Owner Tree Planting Agreement PDF and include a signature from the legal property owner and site contact (if designating a site contact). Signatures may be submitted digitally, or a scanned copy of a printed agreement with a wet signature may be submitted. Please note that only the signature page of the agreement needs to be submitted with the application.
Step 5. Apply via the online application, please fill out all required fields, and upload the signed Property Owner Tree Planting Agreement, via the document upload feature within the application.
Step 6. Use the ‘Submit Application’ button to finalize and send the application.
Step 7. Monitor the inbox of the email address included in the application for confirmation and next steps. Confirmation emails and all correspondence will be from trees.LUEG@sdcounty.ca.gov.
