Proposed Increase to Sewer Rates

Vector Truck

The Sanitation District provides sanitary sewer service to over 37,000 residences and businesses in eight unincorporated communities within the county.  The Sanitation District operates and maintains over 430 miles of sewer lines, 8 pump stations and 3 treatment plants with an annual budget of over $30 million.

The Sanitation District is governed by the County Board of Supervisors and managed by the County’s Department of Public Works (DPW).

The Sanitation District works to keep the sewage system operating safely without disruption of service. Prevention of sanitary sewer overflows and protection of environmental resources is a high priority.

Increase Sewer Rates Reasoning

Sewer Rates

The Sanitation District collects sewer service charges on the property tax roll for parcels receiving services.  On February 8th 2023,  the Board of Supervisors adopted a recommendation of a new 5-year rate schedule to fund on-going operation and maintenance of the sanitary sewer system; a multi-year rehabilitation and replacement program for aging infrastructure; and mandated emergency reserve funds.

Below is the Proposition 218 notice which was mailed to all San Diego County Sanitation District sewer customers to inform them of the proposed rate increase. There are also translations of the notice in eight additional languages.

The Financial Report

The San Diego County Sanitation District conducted a wastewater study to evaluate the future revenue requirements for operating and capital costs.
