Assisted Living and Board & Care Facilities

Assisted living facilities, which include licensed board and care homes, provide 24/7 support and supervision for people who require assistance and cannot live independently. Within these settings, residents receive enhanced, recovery-focused support to help residents build on their strengths, manage symptoms, and achieve greater self-sufficiency.

There are two types of licensed assisted living/board and care facilities: Adult Residential Facilities (ARFs) and Residential Care Facilities for the Elderly (RCFEs). Both provide a home-like environment where residents receive care, supervision, and rehabilitative services, with eligibility for Medi-Cal being a key factor for admission.

Recuperative Care

Recuperative care, also known as medical respite, provides adults with behavioral health conditions who are experiencing homelessness a safe place to recover after a hospital stay while healing from an illness or injury. The intent is to provide a stable environment, support recovery, and prevent a return to homelessness. Services include case management and connections to primary care, mental health and substance use care, and other supportive services, including transportation, food, and housing. Read the County News Center article (10/8/24) to learn how these services first became available in San Diego County.
