COVID-19 Emergency Rental Assistance Program
The County of San Diego Emergency Rental Assistance Program provides one-time grants of up to $3,000 to cover a maximum of two months rent for eligible households financially impacted by the COVID-19 pandemic.
Applications can be submitted from September 24, 2020 – October 8, 2020.
Applicants will be selected through a random lottery and assistance will be paid directly to the landlord.
Eligible Areas: Individuals and families countywide. Residents who live within jurisdictions with their own COVID-19 rental relief program would not be eligible for the County program unless those jurisdictions’ funds have already been depleted. (All cities included except - Carlsbad, Escondido, National City, and San Marcos)
Eligible Income: Household income must fall at or below 60% Area Median Income as established by the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development. (See 60% AMI chart below)
COVID-19 Related Financial Hardship: Households must have experienced a financial hardship directly related to COVID-19. This includes loss or reduction of income due to COVID-19 or increase in medical expenses incurred as a direct result of COVID-19.
Other Eligibility Notes:
- Households must not receive any other forms of rental subsidy such as Section 8 or other rental assistance programs, rapid rehousing assistance, or rental assistance from non-profit agencies.
- Only one application per residence will be permitted.
- The applicant’s landlord must agree to participate in the program to process the one-time emergency rental assistance grant.
To be eligible, the combined income of all persons in the household must fall at or below 60% Area Median Income (AMI). Please see AMI chart below.

The period for submitting applications was from September 24, 2020 through October 8, 2020. The application period is now closed . Log on to the ERAP Application Portal to check on the status of your application.
Following the two-week application period, the County will begin
processing applicants based on a randomized selection process.
