Proper Disposal of Residential Pharmaceuticals
Recent reports of drug compounds in the environment highlight the need for alternatives to flushing unwanted medication. The California Integrated Waste Management Board (CIWMB) is developing model programs for the collection and disposal of home-generated pharmaceutical waste. Until an approved model has been developed, the Department of Environmental Health recommends that households dispose of expired and unwanted medications following the guidelines of the U.S. Office of National Drug Policy at: http://www.whitehousedrugpolicy.gov/publications/pdf/prescrip_disposal.pdf
In August 2015 the local office of the Drug Enforcement Agency (DEA) prepared the "Prescription Drug (and Sharps) Collection Box Locations" brochure. This brochure lists the known medication and sharps drop box locations throughout the County of San Diego.
