Types of passports

Passport book

A U.S. passport book lets you travel anywhere in the world. Some countries require a visa.  

Passport card

A U.S. passport card lets you enter at land border crossings or sea ports-of-entry from:  

  • Canada  
  • Mexico  
  • The Caribbean  
  • Bermuda  

You cannot use a passport card for international travel by plane. 

 

 

Fees

When you apply for a passport, there are two fees for each application:   

  1. Acceptance fee: Pay by cash, check, or money order to the County of San Diego.   
  2. Application fee: Pay by check or money order to the U.S. Department of State.  

Credit or debit cards are not accepted. 

Passport book 

Regular processing time: 

  • Adult: $130 to the U.S. Department of State
  • Child: $100 to the U.S. Department of State
    plus:
  • $35 acceptance fee to the County of San Diego

Expedited processing time: 

  • Adult: $190 to the U.S. Department of State
  • Child: $160 to the U.S. Department of State
    plus:
  • $35 acceptance fee to the County of San Diego

Expedited processing time with overnight mail: 

  • Adult: $211.36 to the U.S. Department of State
  • Child: $181.36 to the U.S. Department of State
    plus:
  • $62.50 acceptance fee to the County of San Diego

Passport card 

Regular processing time: 

  • Adult: $30 to the U.S. Department of State
  • Child: $15 to the U.S. Department of State
    plus:
  • $35 acceptance fee to the County of San Diego

Expedited processing time: 

  • Adult: $90 to the U.S. Department of State
  • Child: $75 to the U.S. Department of State
    plus:
  • $35 acceptance fee to the County of San Diego

Overnight mail is not available for passport cards.

Passport book and card

Regular processing time: 

  • Adult: $160 to the U.S. Department of State
  • Child: $115 to the U.S. Department of State
    plus:
  • $35 acceptance fee to the County of San Diego

Expedited processing time: 

  • Adult: $220 to the U.S. Department of State
  • Child: $175 to the U.S. Department of State
    plus:
  • $35 acceptance fee to the County of San Diego

Expedited processing time with overnight mail: 

  • Adult: $241.36 to the U.S. Department of State
  • Child: $196.36 to the U.S. Department of State
    plus:
  • $62.50 acceptance fee to the County of San Diego

 

Passport photos

We can take passport photos in our office. They are $11 per set.
