Filling the Vacancy of the County Treasurer-Tax Collector

The San Diego County Board of Supervisors is considering individuals who applied to serve the unexpired term of the elected San Diego County Treasurer-Tax Collector. 

On August 2, 2025, San Diego County Treasurer-Tax Collector Dan McAllister retired. The Board of Supervisors is responsible for filling the vacancy.

The mission of the San Diego County TTC is to provide the residents, agencies and employees of San Diego County with superior financial services in terms of quality, timeliness, efficiency and value while maintaining the highest levels of customer service and satisfaction. The office oversees the collection of more than $9.1 billion in property taxes every year, dealing with both secured property, like buildings and unsecured property, like boats, racehorses, etc. The office also collects the transient occupancy tax and the cannabis business tax from establishments in unincorporated parts of the County. In the Treasury, the office manages the County investment pool, which ranges in size from $10.2 - $18.8 billion in assets on an annual basis. The Treasury is also the paying agent for all 42 school districts in the region. 

The person appointed by the Board will be expected to complete the current term that expires January 4, 2027.

Applicants for this position must:

  • be a registered voter of the County of San Diego;
  • be a citizen of the United States and the State of California;
  • meet the requirements of County of San Diego Administrative Code Article L, Section 840, pertaining to criteria to hold office as the Treasurer-Tax Collector;
  • not have been convicted of any crime disqualifying the applicant from holding elected office;
  • complete the application process; and
  • be able to formally assume the position not later than twenty (20) business days following the selection by the Board of Supervisors.

The selected candidate will be required to pass the County’s background investigation.

Meet Treasurer-Tax Collector Finalists at Community Meet and Greet

Members of the public are invited to meet and greet with the four finalists for County Treasurer-Tax Collector and ask them questions during an upcoming community event. The four finalists are (in alphabetical order by last name):

  3. Christian Peacox
  4. Detra Williams

The informal event will take place at 5:30 p.m. on Thursday, Oct. 30 in the Campus Center Chambers at the County Operations Center in Kearny Mesa. The address is 5520 Overland Ave., San Diego, 92123.

The Board of Supervisors selected the four finalists during a public hearing Sept. 30. The four were chosen from a pool of 11 qualified applicants who applied for the position.

During the community forum, the finalists will give short introductory remarks and then take part in small group or one-on-one conversations with attendees who can learn more about the candidates and their perspectives.

On Tuesday, November 4, 2025, the Board of Supervisors will hear from each finalist and select the Interim Treasurer-Tax Collector. At that meeting, each finalist will again have a three-minute opportunity to present themselves to the Board of Supervisors. After all the presentations, the Board may ask questions of the applicants. The public will also be given an opportunity to speak at the hearing. After this, the Board will vote to select the interim Treasurer-Tax Collector. The appointee will need at least three votes. It is anticipated that the appointee will be sworn in on November 18, 2025.
